Fuelled by a curry from last night and a hearty breckie at the River View B&B this morning, we're on our merry C2C way from Richmond at the unfeasibly early hour of 07:45.
How so? Today is The Big One - 23 pretty nondescript miles of flatness linking the beauty of the Dales with the moody magnificence of the North York Moors.
And in between? Richmond sewage works, Catterick garrison and racecourse, myriad farms and the alluringly named village of Danby Wiske.
Distance covered: 23.4 long, long miles
Elapsed time: 8 1/2 hours
Calories consumed: a whopping 1,950...but largely replaced by a cheese & pickle roll, huge chunk of fruitcake, 2 Crunchy bars in approx. 12 minutes at The Swan in Danby Wiske.
Roll call: Simon's knees held up well, thanks to musical and elastic support; Gill's smug fitness endured until the last couple of miles, when the snake hips started to gripe a tad; my gout/blisters/bottom all hovering in that dangerous territory 'twixt bearable pain and unremitting suffering.
Highlight of the day: Simon wandering into The Swan's beer cellar for a pee.
Thought for the day: never over-promise and under-deliver. A cheese & pickle roll is ok...but not if you've spent 3 hours dreaming of a bowl of homemade soup and a steak pie.

ReplyDeleteToday sounds tough, admire your determination to reach the end of this impressive walk in spite of aches & pains. Feel sure you will have many congratulations when you return home , hope you get a certificate, you all deserve one.
Weather miserable here,hope it is good for your last two days & return journey . Great photos from Steve,look forward to hearing some interesting stories about this epic trek.
